Belvoir & Burnhope ‘09
October 24 - 31
Saturday, October 24
Arrive London. You'll be met at the airport and brought (45 minutes) to The
Hunter’s Arms, a 16th Century pub hotel near Broomhills, home of
gunmakers Atkin Grant & Lang. Dinner tonight, our first together, and
breakfast tomorrow will be here in the pub.
Sunday, October 25
Those who haven’t brought their own will select guns from the Atkin Grant &
Lang gunroom. After shooting a few clays, we’ll drive north about 100 miles
to The Olde Barn Hotel in the village of Marston, Lincolnshire, our home for
the next three nights.
Monday, October 26
Our first big day at Belvoir Castle—350 pheasant and partridge on the
estate’s famous drives. Paired guns are recommended; loaders will be
provided. Our lunches will be served in the Shoot Room at the Castle.
Tuesday, October 27
Our second driven day at Belvoir Castle—also 350 pheasant and partridge.
Wednesday, October 28
A travel day. We’ll drive 220 miles farther northeast to County Durham and
check into Burnhope Lodge near Burnhope Moor, where we’ll spend three
nights. We will be in the North Pennine Hills, a scenic moorland area that is
home to many famous grouse shoots.
Thursday, October 29
Our first day of driven grouse at Burnhope. The expected bag is 60 brace.
Paired guns are recommended here as well, as red grouse are notoriously
fast and agile. Loaders will again be provided.
Friday, October 30
Our second day of driven grouse at Burnhope. Our deluxe lunches—mid-day
meals, actually—will be served in a snug building right at the moor.
Saturday, October 31
After a last night at Burnhope Lodge, we’ll return to the airports for flights
home or onward. (Please note: Your return flights should be booked for late
in the day; it’s a five-hour drive to Heathrow.)
For the Non-Shooters:
There is much to enjoy at both of our destinations. Do not miss a tour of
Belvoir Castle (www.belvoircastle.com), the ancestral home of the Manners
family, the Duke & Duchess of Rutland. On any day, partners are welcome to
join the Guns in the field; it can be a spectacular experience, and lunches are
often memorable all by themselves. A vehicle & driver will be available for
local explorations as well, from the Yorkshire Dales to the Scottish Borders.
Please Note:
• Driven days on the Belvoir estate should provide team bags of
approximately 350 pheasant and partridge. Burnhope Moor should provide
bags of 60 brace (120 grouse) each day. There will be no overage charges,
extra fees for more birds, at either place.
• Appropriate side-by-side or over/under guns, 12- or 20-bore, are required.
Pairs are recommended; loaders will be provided. All cartridges are provided.
High-quality guns from Atkin Grant & Lang’s gunroom will be available to use
at no extra charge.
• All permits, certificates and licenses are included and we will assist with
passage of guns into and out of the UK.
• The temperature is likely to be 45-50 degrees F and rain is possible any
time. Proper shooting gear, footwear and clothing is needed. (“There is no
bad weather—only bad clothing.”)
